Loremaster of Draenor Guide

Updated for World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth 8.0.1 Loremaster of Draenor banner image

Loremaster of Draenor is required for both the Loremaster achievement and the Draenor Pathfinder, which unlocks flying mounts in Draenor. Warlords of Draenor was the first expansion where you had to essentially complete all the solo content before they would allow you to fly. In previous expansions, you could unlock flying when you were near or at level cap. The “Pathfinder” route to unlock flying stuck around for Legion and Battle for Azeroth. This means that if you played WoD after Pathfinder was introduced there is a good chance you have achievement completed. Make sure to check the WoW Loremaster Calculator to be sure.

If, however, you did not play WoD towards the end of the expansion, then odds are you still have a few zones to finish off. Each of the leveling zone’s starter quests becomes available based on your character's level, so unless you went out of your way to complete the storylines, you got moved on to the next zone before completing the one you are in.

Faction Considerations

Entrance to the Horde Garrison Loremaster of Draenor is different from the Loremaster meta achievements that came before. You must complete all the zones on one faction. With the other Loremaster meta achievements, you could complete each of the zones on whatever character you like, Horde or Alliance, and the progress would count.

Entrance to the Alliance Garrison All it takes is one trip to the forums to see this has been a source of frustration for players attempting to complete Loremaster of Draenor. From a game data perspective, there are two different achievements named Loremaster of Draenor: one available to Horde players and one available to Alliance. Compare this with Loremaster of Outland or Loremaster of Northrend: there is only one achievement each that is available to both Horde and Alliance players. You can see this reflected on the Achievements Listing page on WoW Loremaster.

What this means is that you must pick either Horde or Alliance and only use characters from your chosen faction to progress towards Loremaster of Draenor.

Storyline

he events of Warlords of Draenor take place in an alternate universe version of Draenor: the home world of the Orcs and the setting for the Burning Crusades expansion. In our version of Draenor, too many portals to other worlds were opened which caused the land to break and created the Outlands as seen in Warcraft III and the Burning Crusades. WoD takes place just before the first portal was opened on Draenor, so we get the see the world as it was before the events of Warcraft: Orc & Humans.

I, personally, am not a fan of using time travel and/or alternate universes as a narrative element. In addition to all the logical inconsistencies, it took an entire novel just to explain how the story of Warcraft transitioned from the Siege of Orgrimmar to fighting the Iron Horde on an alternate version of Outland set 30 years in the past.

If you can look beyond that though, the individual story lines of the WoD leveling zones are engaging. The zones are packed with Warcraft lore and characters that we previously had only read about, and the leveling content was well received by the community when the expansion launched. I thought the Garrisons were an interesting idea and I initially had fun progressing mine and sending followers on missions. There are no shortages of retrospectives on what the Garrison system became and the impact that had on the game experience, but don't let those reviews prevent you from trying it out. If you haven't yet experienced it, I would encourage you to approach the Garrison with an open mind and enjoy it for what it is.

Where to Start

Khadgar offering the Through the Dark Portal Quest At the time of writing, the level zone changes implemented in patch 7.3.5 did not impact the WoD leveling experience. At level 90, a quest to speak to Khadgar at the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands becomes available on the Command Boards in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. This will initiate the assault on the Dark Portal and begin the quest chains for Shadowmoon Valley for the Alliance or Frostfire Ridge for the Horde. If you are trying to complete this achievement on a boosted character, this quest will not be available on the boards. Instead, you just must go to the Blasted Lands and talk to Khadgar.
