Loremaster of Cataclysm Guide

Updated for World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth 8.0.1 Loremaster of cataclysm guide banner

If you played WoW during the Cataclysm expansion, then you are probably about halfway towards your goal of Loremaster of Cataclysm. Unless you specifically went out of your way to complete all of the leveling content, you could reach level cap (85 when Cataclysm launched) by completing a little over half of the quests in the leveling zones. Before you get started make sure to check the WoW Loremaster Calculator to see how close you are to completing Loremaster of Cataclysm and which characters you should use to finish it off.

If you did not level through the Cataclysm zones when they were current content, then you likely only completed one zone, if any. Prior to the Legion 7.3.5 leveling zone revamp, you could hit level 85 in Mount Hyjal alone with full Heirloom gear and a few dungeon queues.

Storyline

Screenshot of the tower in Twilight Highlands If you started playing World of Warcraft only after the launch of Mists of Pandaria, the storylines of the older content will be harder to pin down. In Pandaria onward there is one central story and all the content attempts to push that one narrative forward. Prior to that, Cataclysm included, there is a setting, but no real central story. At the beginning of each expansion, you get to meet the primary antagonist, and towards the end of the expansion you get to defeat him or her in a raid. Everything that happens in between just takes place in the setting when that big bad guy was introduced. The zone storylines do not follow the central narrative.

The events of Cataclysm start when the black Dragon Aspect Neltharion, the Earth-Warder, was driven insane by the Old God infestation of Azeroth. Now known as Deathwing, the Worldbreaker, the once black Dragon Aspect breaks out of Deepholm and causes the Shattering. Deathwing then tries to execute his plan to bring about the Hour of Twilight: an "existential threat to end the world" kind of scheme.

The leveling zones introduced in Cataclysm all take place in this setting and the individual stories somewhat involve characters dealing with the ramifications of the Shattering or Deathwing's plot to end the world. Each of the leveling zones are disjoint, both in location and in terms of storyline. The result is that Cataclysm doesn't feel like a cohesive whole, with each zone being its own disconnected narrative unit.

Where to Start

Uldum vista The level zone updates released during the Legion 7.3.5 patch changed the requirements for accessing the Cataclysm leveling zones. Prior to 7.3.5, you had to visit your faction capitol to pick up a quest to talk to Thrall at the Malestrom, after which you got to choose to go to Mount Hyjal or Vashj'ir.

Now, the Cataclysm zones share a level range with the Mists of Pandaria content. Both expansions’ zones will become available on the Command Boards in capital cities and the Adventure Guide menu based on your character's level, starting at level 80. Quests and monsters within the Cataclysm zones will scale with your character’s level up to a max level of 90. The level ranges for the individual Cataclysm zones are shown below.
